硅（Si）是地球中丰度第三高的元素，也是地壳中丰度第二高的元素。虽然高温岩浆活动和变质作用通常产生较小的Si同位素分馏，但低温化学反应和生物过程所导致的Si同位素分馏却十分显著。因此，全岩和/或矿物Si同位素已被广泛用作壳内重熔和壳-幔相互作用的示踪剂。锆（Zr）是高场强元素之一，也是后期蚀变和化学风化过程中最不活动的元素，其稳定同位素体系可以敏感地示踪硅酸盐岩浆系统的分异过程。
